OpenAI launched ChatGPT Ads in France on August 24, 2026. In just a few days, a third major advertising channel has emerged alongside Google Ads and Meta Ads. For marketing teams and advertisers accustomed to traditional intent-based platforms, this requires a different targeting logic, a new format to master, and navigating market benchmarks that do not yet exist.

In this article, we break down what ChatGPT Ads really is, how the targeting works, what you should budget, and how to integrate it into your existing advertising mix.

ChatGPT Ads at a glance

  1. ChatGPT Ads displays a sponsored card below the ChatGPT response without altering the content of the response itself, and is only visible to users on the Free and Go plans.
  2. Targeting is based on conversation contexts described by the advertiser, rather than keywords. This is a fundamental shift in logic compared to Google Ads.
  3. The minimum daily budget set by OpenAI is €25. To gather enough data to make informed decisions, a budget of €2,500 per month is recommended.
  4. Tracking (OpenAI pixel, Conversions API) has been available since May 2026 and should be installed from the very first euro spent.
  5. ChatGPT Ads reaches prospects in the consideration and comparison phase. It is complementary to Google Ads, not a replacement.

What is ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT Ads is OpenAI's advertising platform. It allows advertisers to display an ad within the ChatGPT interface, below the model's generated response, whenever a user's conversation is relevant to their offer.

The format is a sponsored card: a favicon, an advertiser name, a short headline (approx. 16 characters), a description (approx. 32 characters), an image, and a link. The ad is clearly labeled "Sponsored" and is visually separated from the response. It does not in any way modify what ChatGPT says. OpenAI enforces an "Answer Independence" principle, which prohibits any advertiser influence on the generated content.

This is an important point to understand from the start: appearing in ChatGPT responses as a source or recommendation is a different challenge, which falls under GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) rather than ChatGPT Ads. The two approaches are complementary and follow distinct logics.

Who sees the ads?

Only users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscribers do not see any ads. This is a factor to consider when estimating your audience before launching, especially in B2B, where many decision-makers use a paid version of ChatGPT.

How does conversational targeting work?

This is the fundamental difference compared to traditional intent-based platforms like Google Ads or LinkedIn Ads.

On Google, you target a keyword typed by a user. On ChatGPT, you describe the types of conversations where your offer fits to the OpenAI Ads Manager. These descriptions are called "context hints." The system then decides on its own when to serve the ad, based on whether a conversation matches the described context.

Example: Instead of bidding on "HR management software," a SaaS provider will describe conversations where a user is looking to compare tools for managing team leave, automating payroll, or tracking employee performance. It is a description of a situation, not a keyword.

Since July 2026, OpenAI has also allowed the import of customer lists to include or exclude audiences, opening up opportunities for remarketing or excluding existing customer bases.

Accurately describing relevant contexts is the core of the work. This is exactly what we do in GEO: mapping the prompts where your prospects make their decisions. This experience gives us a concrete head start in building context hints for ChatGPT Ads.

What is the budget for ChatGPT Ads?

OpenAI requires a minimum daily budget of €25 in Ads Manager, which is about €750 per month. This is the technical floor, not a testing budget.

As with Google Ads or LinkedIn Ads, a budget that is too low does not produce enough data to make informed decisions about context hints. We recommend a media budget of at least €2,500 per month to test several targeting hypotheses in parallel and obtain a significant sample size, to be adjusted according to your sector, average order value, and the density of your target conversations.

Cost-per-click remains low as of September 2026, as competition is still weak in most sectors. Now is the time to position yourself before bidding prices rise.

How do you measure ChatGPT Ads conversions?

OpenAI has offered a conversion pixel and a Conversions API since May-June 2026. The Ads Manager also includes a "Conversions" campaign objective to drive bidding based on the actions that matter rather than just impressions.

These tracking tools must be installed from the very first euro spent. Without them, it is impossible to know what the campaigns are actually producing in terms of leads or sales. On such a new platform, where market benchmarks do not yet exist, this is even more critical than elsewhere.

We systematically connect ChatGPT Ads conversions to HubSpot and GA4 to manage campaigns based on cost-per-qualified-lead, following the same logic we apply to Google Ads and Meta Ads.

ChatGPT Ads vs. Google Ads: what are the differences?

Both platforms address intent, but in very different ways.

Google Ads captures intent at the exact moment a user types a query. It is the most mature and measurable intent channel, with 25 years of history and highly developed optimization tools. An article like the one on Performance Max campaigns clearly illustrates the level of sophistication possible.

ChatGPT Ads reaches users while they are thinking, comparing, and trying to understand a topic—an upstream phase in the decision-making cycle. The volume is qualified but less immediately transactional.

Both make sense in an advertising mix. Budget allocation should be based on a single criterion: cost per conversion, measured consistently across both channels.

Are ChatGPT Ads relevant for B2B?

Yes, with a caveat. If your buyers use ChatGPT to compare providers, evaluate tools, or quickly get up to speed on a topic before making a decision, the platform is relevant. This is the case in SaaS, services, and consulting.

The caveat: only free users see the ads. To reach decision-makers using a paid version, GEO and LinkedIn Ads take over. All three approaches target the same prospect at different stages of their journey.

How do you get started with ChatGPT Ads?

Self-service access is available at ads.openai.com as of August 31, 2026, for European markets. Account creation, context hint configuration, pixel installation, and creative production can be managed in-house or delegated to an agency.

With such a new platform, benchmarks are still lacking. Industry standards for CTR, CPC, or conversion rates do not yet exist. What matters in this context: clean tracking from the start, testing multiple targeting hypotheses in parallel, and rigorous data analysis before scaling.
